The brazed PHE is the right answer when the duty point is real but the footprint is not. Plates are vacuum-brazed (copper or nickel) into a single sealed pack — no gaskets, no tie bars, no service frame. The unit is roughly one-fifth the volume of a shell-and-tube of equivalent capacity. For an in-row CDU or a sidecar where the heat exchanger has to disappear into a 1U or 2U envelope, the brazed PHE is the form factor. The trade is that it is sealed, not field-openable; replace at end of life rather than open and re-gasket.
